Chance of rejection

80%rejected

You may be the right person, but this document loses you the read. The flaws below are what cost you the call.

Rejected

Right experience, wrong document.

The role asks for someone who owns reliability for a platform team. Your resume shows six years of backend work with almost no outcomes, no ownership, and none of the three terms the screening filter looks for first.

The six-second read

Six seconds in, the reader finds a two-line summary of adjectives, a job title and a wall of responsibilities. Kubernetes, on-call and mentoring never appear on page one, so the resume is gone before your actual work is read.

Why it was rejected

4 reasons this resume gets cut

Fatal

No measurable outcome anywhere in six years

Improved API performance and reduced infrastructure cost.

Why it rejects

Every bullet describes activity, not result. A hiring manager cannot tell whether you moved a needle or maintained a status quo, so the strongest thing about you stays invisible.

Fix it like this

Rewrite your top three bullets as result plus number: “Cut p95 latency 480ms → 120ms across 4M daily requests.”

Fatal

The job's required terms are absent

Kubernetes and Terraform appear nowhere in the resume.

Why it rejects

The posting lists both as required. A keyword screen drops this resume before a human ever opens it — no matter how good the person is.

Fix it like this

If you have real exposure to either, name it in a Skills block and back it with one bullet containing scale.

Major

Responsibilities instead of ownership

Responsible for maintaining the payments service.

Why it rejects

“Responsible for” tells the reader what you were assigned, not what you did or decided. On a senior requisition it reads as junior.

Fix it like this

Lead with the verb and the scope: “Owned the payments service end to end — 3 engineers, 99.98% uptime, zero P1s in 18 months.”

Minor

Two pages, strongest work on page two

Page one covers 2016–2019 in fourteen bullets.

Why it rejects

Screeners rarely reach page two. Your current role — the only one they care about — is the second thing they get to.

Fix it like this

Cut early roles to one line each and give the current role the top half of page one.

Section by section

What survives, what doesn't

  • Header & contact

    Strong

One line, email and link, no photo. Exactly what a parser wants.

  • Summary

    Weak

Four adjectives and no evidence. Delete it or make it one concrete line.

  • Experience

    Weak

Six years of activity with no numbers. This is where the resume is lost.

  • Skills

    Missing

No skills section, so the screening software has nothing to match against.

  • Education

    Strong

Degree, institution, year. Nothing to fix here.

Against the job description

Terms and requirements

Five of ten screening terms are missing, and the two most important ones are listed as required in the posting.

Matched

  • Node.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • AWS
  • REST APIs
  • Agile

Missing

  • Kubernetes
  • Terraform
  • on-call rotation
  • mentoring
  • incident response

Machine reading

What the screening software sees

  • Two-column header can scramble in older parsers — keep contact details in a single left-aligned block

  • No Skills section for keyword matching

  • Dates written as “Summer 2019” — use MM/YYYY everywhere

  • Section titled “Where I've Made an Impact” — parsers only recognise standard headings

Do this next

Change these, then run it again.

  1. 01

Add one number to each of your three strongest bullets

  2. 02

Add the missing required terms from the job description wherever they are true

  3. 03

Move your current role and its outcomes into the top third of page one

  4. 04

Rename your headings to Summary, Experience, Skills, Education
